HALEAKALA

Haleakalā, or Pu’u ‘Ula’u is the East Maui Volcano, is a massive shield volcano that forms more than 75% of the Hawaiian Island of Maui. The western 25% of the island is formed by another volcano, Kahalawai, which according to volcanologists, used to be over 13,000 feet high, but has collapsed and eroded down to a much smaller 5,100. Kahalawai is the older of the two volcanoes at 1.3 million years old and is referred to as the West Maui Mountains. Haleakala is 1.1 million years old and is the is the tallest peak and is 10,023 feet high.

A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY

Since 1977
Run To The Sun is coming back this year after 10 years...virtually, that is! This would be the 30th running of this iconic Maui event. Imagine running from the shores of Maui up to the sky high atop Haleakala, a distance of 36.2 miles with an elevation of 10,023 feet! This is a high altitude finish on the scenic and surreal mountain of Haleakala on the island of Maui, Hawaii. The course is normally run on paved roads starting in Kahului then through the old sugar cane field roads and up to the summit of Haleakala.

Run To The Sun is owned and managed by Valley Isle Road Runners. We hope that the National Park at Haleakala will work with us again in the future so we can enjoy the Run To The Sun event in-person.
